Height at the withers, bitches nine and a half inches; dogs, ten inches. Length of body from fourteen and a quarter to fifteen inches from the front of the chest to back of hindquarters. The dog must be of balanced proportions and appear neither too short nor too long in body. Weight and measurements are for matured dogs at two years of age. Older dogs may weigh slightly in excess and growing dogs may be under these weights and measurements.
Clarification.
While the weight and height limits are important, it should be stressed that the overall balance of the dog is most important. A well-boned, properly-coated dog may appear larger that a light boned, short-coated dog. A slightly under or oversized dog is obvious quality is preferable to a proper sized dog lacking the desired attributes...
My Comments.
I have gleaned knowledge voraciously from all who would share with me. One of these is Mildred Bryant. She was fortunate to have had many good teachers, among them, Lee E. Murray, who at the time of his death was an all-breed judge. When Mildred started her judging career, one of the bits of advice Mr. Murray offered her was "Leave the size to the breeders, unless there is a disqualification." Having applied this advice to my own breeding program, I have owned large and small dogs, and found the right place in my breeding jprogram for all of them.
